Status of Unions in National Negotiations

Fact - Approximately 85% of Union Pacific employees are represented by unions

The latest round of national negotiations between the nation's rail carriers and unions kicked off January 2010.  This process is governed by the Railway Labor Act (RLA) bargaining process.

To date, a national agreement has been approved by the UTU – United Transportation Union and its Yardmaster department.

In addition, the following unions have reached tentative agreements:

  • TCU – Transportation Communication International Union
  • BRC – Brotherhood of Railway Carman
  • IAM - International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers
  • IBEW – International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers
  • IBB - International Brotherhood of Boilermakers, Blacksmiths, Iron Ship Builders, Forgers and Helpers
  • SMWIA - Sheet Metal Workers’ International Association
  • NCFO - National Conference of Firemen and Oilers
  • BRS - Brotherhood of Railroad Signalmen

The remaining unions are in the “30-Day Cooling Off Period” following the Presidential Emergency Board (PEB) Recommendations:

  • ATDA - American Train Dispatchers Association
  • BLET - Brotherhood of Locomotive Engineers & Trainmen
  • BMWE - Brotherhood of Maintenance of Way Employes
