How to be a Smarter Health Care Consumer (Part Two) Right Type of Facility

Use the Right Type of Facility for Non-emergencies

Becoming a smarter health care consumer has many advantages — from assuring you get the best, most appropriate care to effectively managing your financial responsibilities for the cost of care.

Learning what injuries or illnesses require a visit to the emergency room versus an urgent care center, convenience care/retail clinic or doctor’s office is essential because not only will you spend more time in the emergency room, but the costs may vary significantly. However, do not hesitate to seek emergency care treatment for medical emergencies, for example, heart attacks, severe allergic reactions, strokes, fractures, uncontrollable bleeding or difficulty breathing.

For non‐life threatening illnesses or injuries, such as coughs, congestion, cold symptoms, vomiting, fevers, rashes, earaches, immunizations, minor cuts or bug bites, consider seeking treatment from a convenience care/retail clinic, urgent care center or your doctor. By doing so, the average plan cost for visits to these types of facilities is generally under $200 compared to more than $1,000 for an emergency room visit.
